Long Range Shooters 101
Welcome to the Long Range Shooters Facebook group! We welcome every shooter, from those just starting their journey into the world of long range shooting to the seasoned veterans and everyone else in between. We know if you are just starting out that you probably have a lot of questions, and as we represent a very large group of people here and field many new threads every day it is very likely that the questions you have, might have already been asked and answered, we understand that the group search function is not always reliable and want to provide you with something that goes over commonly asked questions and also starts you on the right path to finding out the information that you are looking for from credible sources who use accurate information. As each of us learns and progresses differently; we will continue to update and improve the information contained here.
(Frequently Asked Questions)
We will never be able to answer every question that every person has in this group, however we can start you down the right path and give your credible and accurate sources to make your own determinations.
What is the best caliber/cartridge?- This seems to be the most commonly asked question. The only problem with this question is that there is never going to be an acceptable answer. First you need to determine what you want the rifle to be. Are you using your rifle for hunting, PRS (Precision Rifle Series) matches, tactical use, etc. What range are you looking to shoot to? Are you going to be reloading?
FFP (First Focal Plane) or SFP (Second Focal Plane)- FFP or SFP is a very important and common discussion in the long range shooting world.
MIL (Milliradian) or MOA (Minute of Angle)- This is another impossible to answer question. It is a personal preference. If I make one suggestion in the whole construction of this manual it will be that you match your reticle and your adjustment knobs.
What is the best Scope- There is no cookie cutter answer here. Scopes are very subjective to how far you are shooting, the type of shooting that you are doing, and personal preferences. New scopes and scope manufacturers are coming out on the market every day it seems.
What is the best stock or chassis system for X-Brand Rifle?- This is another question the depends on what you intend to use your rifle for. You can improve your rifle’s accuracy by putting it into an upgraded stock.
Who makes the best bipod?
How small of a group does my rifle have to shoot- As long range shooters we all obsess over group size, but to what extent does it really matter?
What shooting bags should I use? – Being able to stabilize your shooting platform is going to give you better and more consistent accuracy. Like everything else this is not a one size fits all product.
Does Barrel Length really matter?
